Daughter Meladze opens a cafe in a pandemic

The daughter of singer Valery Meladze and his ex-wife Irina opens a cafe in Moscow. Cafe Nabokov LLC was registered on January 10, Sofya Meladze is listed as the sole owner and CEO, follows from the Unified State Register of Legal Entities (EGRLE).

Behind the shoulders of 22-year-old Sofya Meladze is the Faculty of International Relations of the Institute of Energy Policy and Diplomacy of MGIMO, the School of Management of Moscow State University and a course in the history of art at the Higher School of Economics. This is her first experience in business, and Sophia did not publicly talk about it.

In an interview in 2018, the daughter of a pop singer said that she dreams of getting an internship at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and boxing. And with the advent of the COVID-19 pandemic, she admitted that she became interested in cooking.

Her cafe has little chance of succeeding in the current situation in a complex and highly competitive market. According to Sergei Mironov, authorized in the restaurant business of the capital, Meladze will not be able to cope without an experienced team of managers:

“First of all, experience is important for such an enterprise; finding a very strong manager is the basis. The manager will build a kitchen, an operating system, he knows how to understand Russian legislation: there are a lot of nuances, a lot of paperwork needs to be filled out.”

- About 25 years ago, probably, there was a situation when it was possible to come and invent something, but today it is no longer possible. This is science. I often give an example: “Why did you open a restaurant?” “I eat there often and I understand how it works.” “But you also often fly in an airplane. Can you sit at the helm of the plane? It's the same here, - Mironov said in a conversation with the Octagon.

Sophia's parents, Valery and Irina Meladze, broke up in 2014, having lived together for 23 years. The head of the new Nabokov cafe is their middle daughter, and she will apparently compete with her older sister, Inga Meladze, who founded the economy jewelry brand Apeiron a few years ago with the help of her parents, but the project failed.

According to analysts, with the advent of COVID-19, there has been a trend towards simplification in the catering market. Many establishments are moving to a democratic format with the possibility of delivering meals around the city.

According to experts, delivery in a successful cafe today accounts for at least 40 percent of the total number of orders.

But mid-range restaurants have a lot of problems. However, the economic situation of the capital's public catering is better than the regional one.

- It cannot be said that it is scary to open up in Moscow today. The authorities of the capital, having the appropriate budget, have organized support, subsidies, there are no draconian restrictions,” Mironov added.

Six months ago, a significant part of restaurateurs and cafe owners could leave the market altogether. In the summer, the capital's mayor's office denied Mironov's statements about the drop in the revenue of establishments by 80 percent on the first day of the introduction of QR codes. Moscow authorities estimated it at 15-20 percent. At the same time, according to the results of the first day of the operation of the QR-code system, a representative of the manufacturer of online cash registers Atol reported a reduction in delivery orders in Moscow by 15 times.

In January 2022, the President of the Federation of Restaurateurs and Hoteliers of the Russian Federation, Igor Bukharov, said that in general, the demand for restaurants will be directly related to the economic situation in the country. Among the main negative factors, he named a drop in income and an underdeveloped culture of consuming food outside the home in the country.
